Misfits Market…More of a Misfit

We’re all looking for things to make our lives easier and allow us to save money. I know I certainly am, especially in this pandemic, which is why I decided to give Misfits Market a shot. They offer a variety of fruits and veggies delivered to you at a discount, and the only catch is that they are ugly. Well, I’ve never cared if my apples are lopsided or if my vegetables look ugly, so I figured this was the perfect option to bring more fresh fruits and vegetables in my life. My grocery store is very hit or miss, so I figured it was worth trying.

Unfortunately, I have been rather disappointed. Some of the veggies and fruit looks completely normal, and others, well let’s just say I had to throw them out when they arrived. I actually just cancelled my subscription to the market because the quality of the produce was quite frankly, terrible. I received potatoes with mold, strawberries that were blackened from mold issues, apples with holes in them, and black lettuce…appetizing huh?

I do believe that you have to give things a try though, and I gave them 4 weeks of a weekly delivery to get it right, emailing them to complain and discuss the produce level each time it was less than satisfactory so they could realize there was an issue and adjust. Instead, I got empty promises about how they’ll check the stock more carefully, etc. Obviously, that didn’t happen. I also have a friend who signed up around the same time and she too wound up cancelling her subscription to them, a week before myself.

Like me, she loved the idea of reducing food waste, saving money, and having produce delivered to your door on a weekly basis. But also like me, she was less than happy with the produce delivered some days, as well as the quality of some of their add on items. It’s a shame, especially in this economy, as so many people are trying to budget and save money on groceries, while still choosing healthy food options for their families, that they simply couldn’t deliver.

A part of me wonders if it’s due to where I live, as another friend subscribed to them and loved the service, and lives in a different state. But I also wonder if the quality has simply changed from when she first subscribed as they started to grow and expand the areas they serve. Either way, I won’t be signing up for them again anytime soon. Perhaps in the future if I move cities I’ll give them another shot, but for now, it was just too disappointing.
